You can test your home for mold!
You may be asking yourself, “Can I obtain a mold test it for my home?”. I want to share that you can and some of these tests will tell you a lot. We tested our home with two of the three tests I am going to over.
If you are in any position like we were money is an issue and some of these mold testing companies what few hundred dollars per air test.
This was not an option for us, plus these air tests aren’t the most accurate measure if you are symptomatic and reacting or feeling ill in your home.
You may just suspect that your home is making you ill or you have seen visible mold. Remember, you don’t always have visible mold, ours was hiding in the walls. You can read our full story Here
This is why it is important to get your home tested and rule things out. So let me go over some home mold testing options.
Mold Test Kits for My Home Made Easy…
You’re not sure you have mold, but know something is going on in your home. I recommend this test
Sometimes you have mold and other things going on in your home. This home test, tests for mold, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), formaldehyde, and active mold.
We also did this test because after we removed mold I was still having issues and we found out that we had faulty flooring from Lumber Liquidators.
You can read my post on that story here This test offers much more than just a mold test.
This test gave us results for the other issues that were going on in our home. Sometimes it can be multiple things causing issues in a home.
If you highly suspect mold is in your home, I recommend this test.
Let’s talk about what may be going on in your home.
If you are certain that mold is in your home and you don’t think anything else is going on in your home. I would start with a HERTSMI test. I did the dusting method with HERTSMI rather than the vacuum option because we have pets and the vacuum option isn’t recommended when you have pets. So we completed the test by dusting areas we didn’t dust often in the rooms we frequented. I would also recommend doing this for the person that is having most symptoms in
I did the dusting method with HERTSMI rather than the vacuum option because we have pets and the vacuum option isn’t recommended when you have pets.
So we completed the test by dusting areas we didn’t dust often in the rooms we frequented. I would also recommend doing this for the person that is having most symptoms in house. For example, I was the one most reactive so we took a sample from our Master, the living room, and the office.
I would also recommend calling the company for this test prior to ordering and they will tell you what would be best the vacuum/dust method.
The HERTSMI test for the mold DNA of 5 of the most common molds in the home. They also Have the ERMI test that tests over 30 molds in the home but that test is close to $300.00. We did the ERMI test when we initially tested our home. However, I don’t recommend it unless your HERTSMI comes back low.
Ultimately it is your decision on which test you choose. I have used both of them and their results were equally valuable to our family.
Please let me know your experiences and please ask any questions your may have. I would love to hear from you. Comment below..
Wow, I wasn’t aware there were home test kits for mold. I always thought you needed a professional inspector. Both options are definitely something to invest in as inspector do tend to be a bit expensive. Thank you for this info!
Francine,
Great information! Wish I had seen it a few years ago when I moved my family into a newly built home and got deathly ill upon moving in. Within 2 months of being there we discovered awful mold issues and had to burn all of our expensive furniture and vacate the home. It was an awful experience. It’s so nice to know these are available and reliable. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂

Cary,
I am so sorry this happened to you but at least you figured it out so soon. Our house was making me sick for 7 years, who knew it was mold. Not sure if you were able to read my story but you can read it HERE
Nice info, new thing to discover for me! I like everything natural too,so your website is very helpful
Do you know if home inspectors check your house for mold? I always liked the idea of testing my house but assumed calling a company would be too expensive. Looks like a home test kit is the answer for me!
Dan,
Yes, calling a company out is quite expensive. Testing yourself can be little more accurate because you will learn how to read results and not relying on a company to explain something that could give them a lot of profits. It is truly up to you what you decide…
Thanks, this is an interesting post. It’s really good to know that you’ve tried both methods yourself as well.
This is so interesting, thanks for posting! I will have to get my hubby on this right away and make sure our home is safe from mold. We have a newer home but you just never know.
Thanks for an informative post!
Grace
